Q: “..Where can I get the benefits of Omega-3 from? I mean, what foods are naturally rich in this fatty acid? My doctor told me that I need to supplement with fish oil since I don’t consume enough of that and he says I might experience some brain or neural disorders over the long term if I choose to leave it like that. Thanks in advance – Brian..”
A: Hello Brian, how are you? Your doctor has a reason to worry if indeed you have been found to be deficient in omega-3. You can find Omega-3 naturally mainly in oily cold-water fish, such as Salmon, Tuna and Mackerel. An easier way would be omega-3 fish oil pills, but you want to get the other fish benefits as well, in my opinion. You may also find it a little bit in organic grass-fed beef and chicken. Today, most of the meat we buy contain zero omega-3 since we raise it under improper conditions.
If you are vegetarian or vegan, however, there are a few options for you as well. You can go for flaxseeds which are an amazing source of omega-3, but you can also get it from avocados and walnuts, although a smaller amount per gram. In any case, these sources should be enough for you to fill your body with all the omega 3 that it needs.
Keep in mind that more important than the absolute amount of omega 3 is the relative ratio of omega 3 to omega 6. You should thrive to keep omega 6 as low as possible and omega 3 high enough. Some scientists would say 1:1 to 4:1 towards omega 3, but I think it’s easier to simply minimize omega 6 foods consumption while still consuming some of the above foods for the omega 3 benefits.
